Car Won't Start in Phoenix Heat?

Why summer kills batteries, and what to do when you're stranded.

Why Heat Causes Start Problems

Most people think cold weather kills batteries, but heat does the real damage. High temperatures speed up the chemical wear inside a battery, and the weakness shows up later when the engine needs a strong start.

Heat also stresses alternators, starters, belts, hoses and wiring.

What to Check First

  • Do the dash lights come on? Dim or no lights usually means the battery
  • Do you hear a click, a slow crank or nothing at all?
  • Are the battery terminals corroded or loose?
  • Is the battery more than 3 or 4 years old?
  • Try a jump start. If it starts and then dies, suspect the alternator

When to Call a Mechanic

If a jump does not help, or the car keeps dying, stop guessing. We can test the battery, starter, alternator and fuel system to find the real cause. See our no-start diagnostics and battery replacement pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my car not start in the summer?

Heat-weakened batteries are the top cause, followed by failing starters and alternators.

How long should a battery last in Phoenix?

Often around three years, sometimes less. Testing tells you where yours stands.

Can I drive with a weak battery?

You can until it fails, usually at the worst time. Test it before it strands you.

How long does a car battery last in Arizona?

Heat shortens battery life, and many Phoenix-area batteries last around three years or less, compared with the longer lifespans often quoted for milder climates. Test your battery before every summer, and replace it proactively if it is near the three-year mark or tests weak.
